Silvia Singal, a lawyer who has won several cases involving sexual harassment and discrimination claims against Wallenberg, said she was disappointed in the results.

“The lack of diversity is a shame, and reflects badly on the university and Wallenberg, and of course on its faculty and staff,” she said. “And those who would say that there was no sexism problem under her administration are either naive or misinformed.”

But she said she was not surprised by the results, given Wallenberg’s involvement in the school’s new diversity initiative.

Wendy Martin, professor of global studies, said people in her field were upset and questioned her decision to hire a woman.

“No one expected this result,” Martin said. “They were always going to have a problem with a woman, because, of course, women have been underrepresented.”

She agreed with other professors that it was too quick to dismiss Wallenberg.

“I was always willing to change, to do better for the students and myself,” she said. “But this did come out of nowhere.”

Martin said she felt “shame” for leaving Wallenberg’s $260K-a-year job.

“I understand that they’re the best person for the job, but her resignation was a disappointment to everyone that knows her,” she said.

Lorraine Healey, a lecturer on sociology who was one of the few female faculty members at the time of Wallenberg’s appointment, said the university’s decision to make no progress on hiring women was “disturbing.”

She added that many of the faculty members who supported her, like former UC chancellor Helene Schneider, feel “sickened” about what happened in the fall of 2014.

“Now they’ve admitted to it,” Healey said. “It’s so gross. You can’t defend the hiring of someone who you feel wasn’t up to the challenge. I knew that, and I knew that was just the start. It’s shocking.”

Healey has now become an outspoken critic, going as far as to call for the resignation of the president and top administrators.

As the university’s chancellor, Schneider is the highest ranking woman in state government, and is an advocate for women and minorities within the university system.

The UCI Board of Regents voted Wednesday to increase Wallenberg’s annual salary to $450K. Last year
