Nicholas Joseph, 20, was charged with second-degree assault and resisting arrest, but he was released on Tuesday.
Witnesses told police that after the suspects were arrested, the man who was in custody allegedly attacked him. A second man had his face slashed while getting medical attention, and a third witness said he was choked until the suspect dropped him.
Investigators said they didn’t have the victim’s name yet “because I am unsure if he is one of the suspects,” and that this incident appears connected to other harassment of witnesses across the city, including an incident that occurred around 9 p.m. Friday in the 2600 block of North Harding Avenue.
Police were dispatched to the scene, where they saw evidence of assault, they said. After checking on the man with no visible injuries at the scene, they found more suspects hiding in a second-floor apartment.
Police said the 19-year-old was charged with third-degree assault. Police were investigating the case as an attempted murder and hate crime.
Officers said that suspect had a history of assault charges and that the victim had had numerous other altercations with them on other dates in 2012.
After a witness reported they saw the two individuals walking in a hallway of the community center on Harding Avenue, investigators said a person on the street had spotted the two fleeing the home that is in the 5800 block of West Northview Avenue.
They said they took the opportunity to issue a police patrol alert for witnesses to contact 911, and one followed the suspects south down the 700 block of East Northview Avenue before they crashed the stolen vehicle into a pole near the corner of Northview Avenue and East Northview Street.
“Officers were able to catch up to the group, and they stopped to wait until officers from the community center could safely arrive as well,” investigators said.
During the stop, the teens were seen driving erratically and refusing to stop, they said. Police said both would’ve been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a destructive device, but the men chose to plead not guilty.
