Melissa Ansari, an adjunct professor of politics and international relations at Ohio State University and former editor in chief for the left-leaning student newspaper The Lantern from 1979 to 2005, has long been criticized for her support among African-Americans for the military action in the Middle East. She defended a 2007 interview that was featured on the front page of The Huffington Post’s website, saying it “should not be interpreted to imply that the views she expresses on issues of social justice or human rights do not cross the line into racism and bigotry.”

At the same time, Ansari was at the forefront of challenging university administrators for creating racially restrictive policies of gender discrimination. She was named co-president of the first historically black university in America, the University of Montana, during a 2008 speech denouncing affirmative action and calling for the abolishment of the Department of Education.

When asked why her support of these policies and calls for abolishing the departments of education and the Department of Education are racist, Ansari told the News in an interview last year that, like those on campuses nationwide, “We don’t discriminate based on race, gender, religious affiliation or sexual orientation. We don’t give credit to students based on the number of credits they earn. Those are not practices that should characterize anybody.”

The University of Maryland, which has its own diversity task force, also recently published a guidebook called “A Resource Guide to Diversity” that urges black freshmen to avoid inter-racial dating and discuss their concerns with professors.
