Yasmin Tobal, a Canadian citizen and an actress of Turkish descent has garnered considerable amounts of attention and appreciation for her role as the protagonist in the award-winning movie called Oz the Great and Powerful. The film has received a warm critical acclaim from most critics and audiences across the Globe. However, one attribute that is not liked by all is the ethnicity and Nationality of the lead character, which is Tobal. She was played by a Canadian woman, identified as Yana merchandish, who was playing the character of an aging Istanbul beauty whose beauty and charm caught the interest of an American actor of Turkish descent named Natanouf. As it turns out, Natanouf was born in Turkey and brought up speaking Turkish, but by the time he came to know that he had Turkish heritage, he had lost his desire to speak or learn Turkish. Despite this setback, he managed to get a degree in film making from the University of British Columbia in Canada, and after working for a while in the animation industry, decided that he wanted to make a career in acting.

Tobal then spent some years performing in Turkish shows, Turkish soap opera and English language movies in Turkey and England. In fact, she made at least four such movies, but apparently didn’t feel comfortable in portraying the character of a black American in a largely white setting. After some time away from the limelight, Tobal returned to TV, where she appeared in the popular comedy series “odied”, hosted by Tina Fey. It is interesting to note that the only episode of this popular sitcom featuring Tobal’s character involved a racist incident, in which the show’s character is seen making remarks about eating all the blacks in the United States. In another episode, she was seen wearing an expensive diamond ring that is stereotypical of African cultures.

Finally, Tobal made her foray into Hollywood in the role of a villain in the action-thriller titled as Man on the Moon. She then appeared in the horror film “Carrie”, which was released in 2021. In that film, she plays a villainous character who plots the first murder scene ever in a movie. She later appeared in the movie version of the novel The Cube. Then she returned to the television screens in the finale of the popular drama series House of Cards, playing the role of Frank witnessing the death of his wife. All these films have been praised by critics across the world, as well as winning several awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
