Why wear toe up socks, you may ask? Well, I’m not entirely certain, I suppose there must be some sort of psychological aspect to it because these socks are so incredibly comfortable. Socks are so great.
They’re made out of cotton, or other thermal-thick material for extra warmth, and they have a little pocket for the yarn needle. Knit toe up socks usually takes me between five and eight minutes to make. They come in a range of colours, depending on what the manufacturer offers, and most have at least three different coloured buttons. Buttons usually come in sets of two, three, four, or five. I usually just button my socks together, which can get annoying if you have big nails, although a few pairs of buttons will be perfectly adequate for small toes.
There are two ways to sew these socks onto your leg: either with a normal long thread or with a specialised footbinding. The first is a lot harder, especially if you don’t have good quality double-sided tape, as you need to control the tension of the thread. It’s really hard to describe how difficult it is, except to say it’s not really something you would want to do yourself. It’s also a lot more expensive. But if you’re trying to get your own creative act going, or if you have an odd number of feet you’d like to cover, then footbinding is probably for you. It’s very easy to do, just bind the toe up under the sock, usually with some strong but flexible basting tape, and you’re done.
