Natasha Kay is an Australian tennis player and has won the Aussie open several times, including the 1996 and 2021 Wimbledon titles. She is known as a high-caliber player, who commands the highest compliments from other players, and she enjoys a great support system in the game. Now, however, her career is at stake because of a relationship that began on the internet. According to reports, Nat had gone through a relationship with a man in his mid-twenties, whom she met on a dating site. The courtship was casual and did not include physical contact, as most online relationships do. Despite this, it was enough for the courtship to leave both parties feeling unsatisfied, and they decided to get married, only after stating in court that they were still just friends.

This story is all too common these days when it comes to dating and relationships online. While there is no definite proof that Natasha Kay knew about the website in which she began her relationship, or that she was even looking at it, nor has she said anything to confirm that she would have prevented her partner’s eventual identity theft, nor has she spoken to the man to confirm that their relationship was purely online. So we have a double standard in place here. She could have avoided this if she had simply been more careful about the dating sites she went through, and definitely did not allow herself to become the victim of a stranger’s identity theft.

So while it is good that Natasha Kay took precautions to prevent her partner’s identity theft, it still hurts that in this day and age, it is easy for people to fall into the hands of those who prey on others, be it online or off. It is better to check out one’s social networking profiles when meeting someone new, and pay attention to whether that person makes you feel comfortable before beginning a personal relationship with them. If your gut tells you that you should not be alone with this person, then you should not be alone with that person either. While dating sites are becoming more widespread, do not allow yourself to become a sitting duck for identity theft, and make sure your partner knows everything about you, before you hand over any of your personal information to them.
