What Are Micro Trends?

The idea of macro trends in fashion is that these are the larger trends that can be observed globally and they tend to become very strong over a period of time. As an example, one such fashion trend that has been around for many years is the use of the maxi dress. It is actually quite simple to understand. Maxi dresses are usually very well worn with either a tunic top or just a basic blouse and this style is designed to be comfortable and versatile. As such, it doesn’t necessarily suggest that it is only fashionable in the summer – you can wear it in the winter as well.

A large number of smaller fashion trends also exist, although their definition is not so widely accepted. For instance, dresses are one of the smallest types of trends in fashion, because it is extremely easy to manufacture a dress and have it made in a variety of sizes and lengths. Another micro trend in fashion is hairstyles and this too is very easy to produce. Therefore, women can choose from short hair, long hair or any style in between. Micro trends are really only small trends that can be observed year after year, rather than something that is continuously evolving like macro trends.

As you can see, micro trends are merely variations on the most dominant trends in fashion and they tend to disappear after a while. However, some of these smaller trends do continue to exist, because people have an affinity for them. You might notice, for example, that the use of printed tights or skirts in the winter has become more popular than tights with the same design but that the use of sheer fabrics is less acceptable in the summer months. Therefore, both of these types of trends are examples of micro trends, and although they cannot really be considered as macro trends in fashion, they certainly exist in lots of different styles.
