Francisca Menes was born in Peru and became known as one of the Seven Maidens when she married Cosmopolitan Pedro Aleman in Peru, before traveling to Uruguay, New Zealand, and Canada. Menes is said to have been very good at needlework, embroidery, and painting, which helped her to achieve great wealth. She served a variety of other jobs, most of them related to farming. Her career spanned many centuries, and even into the nineteenth century. Some sources indicate that her career spanned much of the century’s entire history, although this remains an enigma. Regardless, her vast achievements are still impressive today.
One of Menes’s great achievements was becoming the first Peruvian woman to be considered for the position of Grand Duchess. She was also a Queen Mother, and also Grand Duchesses, makes her even more accomplished and famous. As a result, her death is often linked with the beginning of America’s Statehood movement. Her stature is recognized throughout the world and there is even a postage stamp named in her honor.
Today, Menes’s tomb can be found in the City of Santo Domingo, which is located just south of Lima, in the state of Chiapas. Her grave is marked by a small stone structure that has a replica of her white gown and her long hair. Other structures have stones with inscriptions reading, “In Loving Memory”, and “In Remembrance”. Other than this, the exact location of Menes’s tomb is unknown.
