Trend on the Rise

Although there is no head scarves in the closet of every woman, a headscarf fashion trend has started to make its way from the Western culture to the Eastern culture. Nowadays, Western women wear headscarves and men and women alike, even the teens. In this way, the fashion sense of this accessory has spread across cultures and crossed boundaries to become more popular among different people.

The history of headscarves goes way back during the ancient Middle Ages, when they were used as a protection against dust and light. The fabric was thick and would often have stones or jewels tied on the scarf. In some parts of Europe, headscarves were also used as a form of currency, which meant that if a person was married to someone from a different religion, the bride got to wear a matching headscarf with her attire. Today, the headscarf is still considered to be a symbol of religious faith for many Christians.

During the 80’s, the punk movement and hip hop music brought back the trend of wearing long hair and wearing accessories which made the appearance of the face more fashionable. The headbands, bandannas and hats made the hair look thicker and coifs were put into style. Today, the headscarf has been adopted by the hip hop culture and many women sport the accessory whether they want to or not. For those who do not like the idea of sporting headgear, scarves can be worn as everyday wear without feeling uncomfortable.
