The top hat has been around for a very long time. Traditionally associated with the conservative end of the fashion world, it has nevertheless managed to influence fashion trends across the board. It is worn by people of all ages, from hapless schools keen to look cool at fancy dress parties, to fashionistas at major international fashion shows. And it’s not just ladies who sport the hat; men are also seen to be wearing them at many events, particularly during the summer months when riding a bike is more fashionable than donning a top hat!

Top hats are usually seen at formal summer weddings, held in the month of June where the top hat can be removed from its accompanying briefcase or carrier bag, and exchanged for a more suitable (more conservative) top hat on the day. However, the wearing of a top hat isn’t just a matter of going all out and pampering yourself – a top hat, like a real top hat, is a practical item, able to make you look smart. And whilst it is possible to remove the topper in the future, and replace it with a less outrageous hat, the traditional connotation is more than just an anecdote. Top hats are a staple topwear item for just about any age group, so they are a great item for those who are looking to step back into the fashion universe and feel a bit younger.

Top hats can be worn to formal occasions throughout the year. Formal occasions such as weddings, pageants, balls, luncheons, weddings or funerals are all situations in which a top hat will suit. They can also be worn casually, such as at a friend’s birthday party, or in less formal occasions, such as a casual get-together with friends or family. And, should you have one of those “I’m just going to spend the day at the salon” types of personalities, top hats can also be worn to work – though this is more common in the mornings, when employers prefer to be closed to the public.
