The Three Fashion Trends From The 1960s
The 1960s were a tumultuous time in the history of women’s fashion, and the three fashion trends from the 1960s deserve remembrance. First was the “granny dress,” a long white dress made of stiffened satin that reached down to the knees, which tended to make it impossible for women of any height to wear. The “semi-formal” dress was another equally long dress, this time designed for professional women who worked at the office. The last trend, the “school girl” dress, modeled for younger women and cut relatively short, with no shoulder straps and usually consisting of bright, printed patterns on white or beige. These dresses were, of course, the most stereotypical examples of the three fashion trends from the 1960s, and have, sadly, faded from the scene.
The 1960s fashion trends were rooted in the cultural, social, and political factors of the era, and helped to form many of the assumptions which form the basis of fashion today. For example, the 1960s fashions which featured more traditional clothing styles (think: Grandmother’s knitting) were generally conservative choices, but the rise of the” skirts and dresses” helped to change that, giving women more choice when choosing their own fashions. The fashion of the times helped to shape modern-day beauty standards.
The fashions which didn’t take off in the 1960s may never have occurred, but there are still ways in which they can be brought back. T-shirts with slogans, designed by women in black and white, have been used as an effective fashion statement. Additionally, clothing accessories, such as jewelry, shoe-booties, and blankets can all be used to create a certain look, even if it’s not part of the three specific trends. Finally, contemporary materials, such as denim and leather, can be made to look retro thanks to the right type of colorization. With so many options for women of all ages, the 1960s can never go too far out of style.
