Maya Poon was a famous Thai actress who rose to fame after the success of her first two films. She was at the height of her career at the time of the Bangkok Hilton movie franchise when it hit the big screen, and she appeared in four of the series, including the very last, ‘AfterLife’. It was obvious from the start that Maya Poon had an unusual connection to the Thai Royal Family, and her status as a foreigner, working in Hollywood, always attracted curious glances in the glitzy city where royalty from all over the world reside. This lead to constant film offers from Hollywood, each with a price tag of millions of dollars, but despite this, Maya always declined.

Inevitably, after numerous attempts at marriage, Maya Poon finally married into a Thai Royal family in 2021. At first she was upset at her husband’s decision to take her citizenship, and their move to California, but it was a sacrifice she had to make. After a short stay in the States, they returned to Thailand, where her husband took up her new American citizenship. Unfortunately, once she returned to Hollywood, the offers for work again dried up completely, as Thailand remained suspicious of her national background. Slowly but surely she accepted work from a number of different companies, but was never able to receive high enough pay to live on her own, so she remained at the mercy of her husband.

Two decades later, after a period of financial and physical hardship, Maya Poon decided it was finally time to end her marriage. Despite many months of soul searching, it was simply not possible for Maya Poon to divorce her husband and go on with her life. The Thai legal system is such that even those who have committed offences against the Thai government are often allowed to stay in the country, as long as they can produce evidence of rehabilitation, and can prove that their participation in an illegal activity did not lead to their imprisonment. Maya Poon was unable to provide any such evidence, and therefore, was forced to give up her citizenship and leave the country. Despite having lived her whole life as a foreigner, Maya Poon has finally found happiness as a British citizen, following decades of living in a state of captivity.
