Alena Epifanova is a well-known Russian-American famous as a fitness consultant and the host of the popular fitness show Weight Watchers. She has used her international fame to further promote traditional family values by publishing several books including “How I Met My Lord”, “My Father’s Family”, “Becoming King”, “The National Geographic Children’s Health Book” and “I’m a Girl, It’s My Time: A Guide for Moms to Date”. But in this most recent endeavor, she addresses one of the most important aspects of raising children in today’s world: identity. This is evident in her new book entitled “The Nationality Code: What Every Parent Needs to Know About Their Son or Daughter” that tackles the issue of whether or not children belonging to certain nationalities fit into their families.
The premise behind The Nationality Code is simple enough; a genetic predisposition to nationality is supposed to cause all members of a certain biological family to have the same identity. However, genetics and modern day research have shown that this theory could not be so true, and that biological family systems are far more fluid than ever. Therefore, Alena Epifanova makes the case that while there are many markers to determine the identity of a person, there are no hard and fast rules about the family they should be considered members of.
In this book, Epifanova gives great insight into the way height and ethnicity factor into our personal identity and even how it can effect us in our professional lives. For instance, does your nationality tell you how much money you make? Do your parents speak only English? Do you have friends who all seem to have the same international accent? The answers to these and many other questions are explored in detail throughout this engaging text.
