If ever there was a renowned figure in the history of our nation, it is Paola Duque. Born in Peru, she is said to have been the daughter of a prominent Spanish trader, and became known as Niebo Saavedra in her native community. She studied at the prestigious University of Quito, which is located in the state of Quito, Ecuador. There she continued her studies in mathematics, but in 1827, after her marriage to Benito, Duque settled in Lima, Peru. From here, she traveled extensively throughout the continent, spreading her teachings to the people of many nations.

What is so notable about Duque’s teaching methods is that she never romanticizes her students, but rather provides them with respect, understanding, and encouragement. In an age where many women boast about their education and careers, it is refreshing to read about a woman who was content to remain a teacher throughout her marriage to reach such a status. In addition, it shows just how enduring a lifestyle such as theirs was, as even after marriage Duque continued to teach. It is evident that this single-minded teacher was never concerned with fame or fortune, and was content to simply enjoy a career that had brought her nothing but success.

Duque lived a remarkable life, one in which her achievements were respected by both her husband and her students. As a result of this, Duque is considered as one of the great Latin American women of letters. Today, her statue, bronze plaque, and bust are on display in her hometown of La Rioja, Peru. In the coming years, the future of Paola Duque’s career will be heralded by Peru’s leaders, who recognize her profound influence on the Peruvian people.
