Juliana Amorim is a famous writer from Brazil who was once called the “incarnation of Brazilian literature”. Her writings are a testament to her inner life as well as to life in general. In her first novel “The Orphan Ship”, she has made the readers delve into her very personal feelings; as a result, this novel stands to be one of her most beloved works. In this second novel “The Missing Man” we get to know more about the characters who comprise the main cast of this fantastic love story. We also get to know how this relationship grew and developed over the course of the many years this masterpiece has been on sale.

Just like most of us, Juliana Amorim grew up with no regard for her race, her sex or her nationality. Growing up in a poor family, she never had much to offer beyond her loving heart and her beautiful smile. It was love which sealed her destiny when her foster-father offered to take her away to attend college but instead, he took her to Brazil to become a nurse. Although it was an awful and heart wrenching decision for any woman to make at such a young age, it was the best choice she could think of at that time. When she enrolled in the University in Rio, Brazil, she was more than ready to give up her dreams of love and moving to a nice and prosperous country like Brazil where she would be appreciated for her hard work in school.

Unfortunately, Brazil was not prepared to accept foreigners so her foster father decided to move his family to the United States. There he gave up his dream of having his daughter marry an American Citizen and instead became a US citizen so that she could still pursue her dream of becoming a nurse in a good and stable institution. Her education did not go well and she failed to even qualify for a place in a renowned nursing college. Her biological mother also left her when she was very young. But now, at the age of 34, she has finally found her homeland – the United States of America.
