Ann Berrymore is a name that immediately comes to mind for many when discussing the subject of the tall woman’s clothing. In fact, it was Ann Berrymore who dared to be different and became the first ever “Tall Queen” in over 100 years. Although her achievements in this field were far greater than those of other women before her, she nonetheless managed to stand out above all other sufferers of unusual size by maintaining her own personal, unique individuality and refusing to be defined by gender or ethnicity. This endeared her to men everywhere who found her courage and sense of humour and helped her to achieve the highest position at court in England, thereby winning the Dauphine throne for France.

Ann Berrymore’s long reign as Queen Regis lasted only two years. However, her reign did not quite amount to success because France was not interested in annexing England’s possessions in America. On the other hand, however, Berrymore maintained a good relationship with her husband, maintaining their marriage until his death. Her reign was marred by the death of her son, Henry II, in the Battle of Agincourt. Despite this, however, Ann continued to lead a distinguished and dignified life, and even in death was able to enjoy the luxury of a brief celebration of her sainted life.

Ann was also a woman who knew how to appreciate and flaunt her great height. She enjoyed dressing in gowns that showed off her height, and rarely wore clothes that hid her figure. As a matter of fact, there are very few known pictures of Ann Berrymore that reveal her face without her hair covered, which is characteristic of the age and lifestyle in which she lived. Her crowning glory was undoubtedly the long, beautiful gown she wore on the day of her death. The satin, lace and tulle that adorning the bodice was an indication of her tastes for expensive, designer clothing. When viewed through the eyes of a modern woman, the image of Ann Berrymore stands as a clear example of how a woman can look and feel proud of her ethnic heritage, while at the same time exuding self-confidence in her outward attributes.
