Madalynn Belle, a Nationality, was known as Dauntless amongst her fans, as she never gave up her Nationality or any part of her identity to anyone, even her own mother. She had been brought up as a servant in the Belle household and grew up to become a talented actress, with an unsurpassed skill for writing. Part of her charm and allure was that she never allowed herself to be defined by her age or the sex that she was born.
Madalynn was raised as a Belle since she was a young girl and even attended the local Catholic school, until one day her superior, Father Corbel, ordered her to be taught the values of Nationality, especially when it came to the issue of the roles women played in the entertainment industry. This caused Madalynn Belle considerable anxiety, considering that she was already quite tall for her age and yet found herself often playing roles that conformed to the stereotypical views of what a young woman should look like: passive, obedient and appealing. This did not help her image. After her father announced that she would be given a professional acting career, Belle left home and studied acting at the Central College of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
While enrolled in the classes of an acting department, Belle was also forced to adapt to a new personality that she found too intimidating – being too old-fashioned and traditional for her. However, this only strengthened her resolve to maintain her status as Madalynn Belle throughout her acting career and after her marriage to Ruellan Montoya in 1796. Her ability to uphold her position as mistress of Montoya’s household was due in no small part to the encouragement she received from her husband, who knew that she had inherited the Belle fortune and was therefore entitled to enjoy the luxury, leisure and status that came with it. As Madalynn Belle, she became known to the world as one of the most successful and famous actresses of the age, whose acting skills were recognized worldwide, making her a name that would last for decades.
