The nationality and ethnicity of the woman Adele Mildred in the hit TV show “Dancing With The Stars” raises questions about the type of fashion industry she belongs to and whether or not her talents can be translated into a profitable career in the field. Adele is a 23-year-old former dancer for the city’s drag queens who, after several short-term stints as a talent manager, turns professional and tries to land a job with an upscale clothing line. After a disastrous first meeting with a disastrous shopping trip, she ends up stranded on an island without a mirror and an emergency kit. Recognizing that she has a talent for fashion as well as for handling difficult situations, Adele sets out to find a way back to civilization.
In order to make it in the world of fashion, one must be able to look good and feel like they belong. Adele Mildred’s mother tries to convince her that it’s her physical appearance that sets her apart from everyone else, but Adele ignores her advice and continues on her own path. Armed with the knowledge that she can make herself look better than any model she has ever seen, she sets about trying to get a job with a clothing line run by a rich man. While doing so, she meets and befriends a man who reminds her of her grandmother: Daisy, who told her that beauty comes from the inside and that she should never let herself go outside of her comfort zone. When she realizes that the man she has feelings for may actually be her own uncle, Adele makes a decision that will change her life: she must marry him and move to Florida to be with her Uncle.
Although it may seem like a far fetched dream, Adele Mildred’s story does have a faint ring of truth. The fact that she is single, unskilled, and with very little money doesn’t help her case much. But, despite her misfortune, she shows great courage in deciding to do what is right for herself. She chooses to move to a small town in Florida, where she runs a clothing store that caters to rich men. Despite her Uncle’s urging to leave her behind, she chooses to stay and work hard for him. With encouragement from Daisy, Adele Mildred inspires other women to follow their own dreams and live independently.
