“This Is Your song” by Sofia Evangelina is an example of how diverse Sofia Evangelina is as a singer/songwriter. She has achieved mainstream success, but has also pursued a career as a singer/songwriter in the avant-garde world of music. At the age of 19 she began a four-year tenure at the Comedia Studio in Paris, where she wrote and sang for the musical Rent. After leaving that prestigious establishment she signed with Atlantic Records where her catalog featured such diverse songs as the politically oriented “Whitehouse” and “Take Me Out Tonight.” A major break came when she was signed to Virgin after scoring a major record deal with their fellow Argentinian musician Solange Knowles.
“This Is Your Song,” written by Sofia Evangelina and featuring the lead vocalist from The Killers, is one example of where she displays her range as a singer-songwriter. The song features the talents of Eva Mendes and has a simple, but haunting melody. Eva Mendes does a wonderful job of blending emotions and light tones throughout the song as Sofia Evangelina sings about longing. The lyrics are quite personal and deal with the pain of separation that many of us go through as children but as adults it helps us to remember that no matter who we are, everyone can find someone to love.
The lyrics are simple yet evocative and do a nice job of portraying the loneliness that can be associated with growing up in a different place and not having anyone to talk to. However, it seems as though the singer-songwriter had reached a certain amount of stardom for this particular release. This Is Your Song contains only a short solo (which goes on for way over three minutes) and as a result, it lacks the fire and power that many other albums have managed to generate. The Killers have been steadily climbing their way to the top of the Canadian pop chart and with another great album in their hands, they will surely be making a name for themselves in the music scene. I hope that The Best Album Never Fails lives up to the expectations that people have been showing.
