The 1916 Fashion Trends
In the modern fashion industry of today, it is hard to remember when there was such a thing as “Fashion” and the fashion trends that go along with it. However, it is clear that it has always been there. It is usually referred to as the old fashioned style of dressing and more recently, it has been called fashionable or popular. The term fashion has actually had several meanings before it was popularized by the mass media in the twentieth century, but for our purposes let’s use the common modern meaning. With this in mind, it can be said that fashion trends are the rules by which people choose what is considered fashionable and what is considered not to be.
When considering the changes in fashion trends in the modern period, we can start by looking at the clothing styles of the time. The main styles were either formal long gowns, long skirts, long dresses with corset tops or corset vests, or flowing, sleeveless dresses with puffed sleeves or ribbons at the wrist. At the end of the 19th century, these traditional long gowns gave way to more streamlined and fashionable fashions which were characterized by short, form-fitting garments. These fashions became known as feminine and were introduced by women who felt that they could no longer wear the clothing fashion trends of their day. Some of the most popular designs at this time included the V-necked shirt, long sleeve shirt, and bell-bottoms.
After this brief history, the fashion trends of the modern era were formed. Just as the clothing styles changed, so did the styles of the men who wore them. Guys now can wear long tuxedos instead of the tail coats that they used to wear in the past, and they can now use suits, instead of suits with coats, to create an entire look. Guys can also be more creative with their fashion sense by experimenting with different accessories and colors than they once could. Whether it be the pocket watch or the cuff links, or some other accessory, the modern man’s wardrobe is one that is as exciting as it is unpredictable.
