Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sofia Rei was named after her parents, which likely explains her habit of speaking in the English language. Reihan, or Rei, studied violin in school, but her passion for music prompted her to focus on vocal technique instead. As a result, she developed a naturally expressive voice that has characterized her throughout her professional career. As a vocalist and singer, Rei has had major hits in Japan, England, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2021, she appeared on the cover of the album “Singles in the Street,” and since that time has released several other well-received albums.
While many classical vocalists emphasize on the quality of their lips and delivery in their songs, little attention is paid to what is probably the most important aspect of Sofia’s vocal abilities: her voice quality and strength. When compared to so many south American folk singers who sing with strong beats, Sofia Rei’s pronunciation and phrasing are very smooth, yet her vibrato is far from perfect. Her range extends from the familiar high-pitched notes heard in jazz to the much more difficult low-pitched notes found in pop songs. This versatility makes her an extremely versatile vocalist and performer.
Despite her extensive training in jazz, vocal performance, and songwriting, Sofia Rei still retains her fundamental love of music. As a vocalist, she performs mostly in open bars where there is no need to perform complicated or demanding vocal techniques. Instead, she is able to freely express her unique vocal style using her natural gifts and unique style of playing the piano. This ability enables her to easily communicate with her audience. Reihan’s musical interests also include the works of both indigenous and non-native American musical styles. While she continues to be inspired by both music styles, her own personal genre of electronic music allows her to create original music that connects with contemporary audiences.
