Samia Kabir, a lawyer representing women who fought the new law, said it was the first time a Supreme Court decision has specifically addressed women’s rights.

“This is a victory for women in the country. Even among the Muslim countries, we are a very backward society in their attitude about women’s rights,” she said.

Iran has some of the worst gender segregation laws in the world, with women banned from swimming in public pools and men in certain public spaces, such as driving cars.

Women are also barred from driving a car and are allowed to travel only with a male relative or husband.

But the bill is one of several in Iran addressing a number of issues seen as hindering women’s freedom, including domestic violence and harassment by police and judges.

Kabir said women will file the appeal if the current law is accepted. “We hope that the court will take the law into consideration and reject the appeal within 30 days,” she said.

The new law also does not ban men and women from visiting each other’s homes.

Women wearing trousers and long skirts, such as the hijab worn by women in traditional Persian dress during the holy month of Ramadan, can enter men’s private homes as well as women’s homes.

“Women should be allowed to enter the homes of men as well as women’s homes. I would love to see a court order that women are given access to the homes of men because such a policy should be applied equally,” said lawyer Mohammad-Ehsam Sadeghi.
