A 14-year-old girl in the small town of East Peoria was severely beaten and left for dead on Sunday, authorities said.
The stabbing happened at about 6:20 p.m. when a 14-year-old girl was walking home on Elston Ave. near Peoria High School, said Capt. Mark Tynan, commander of the Peoria police department.
According to police, a teenage boy and her mother got into a fight with her mother’s boyfriend, and at some point, the boyfriend got the girl into a fight. That’s when a male adult punched her, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.
Police Chief Jeff Davis didn’t want to say much about the girl’s death until next of kin had been notified.
“It’s shocking that someone would do this to a young and impressionable teen, but at this point, it appears that it was an isolated incident,” Davis said. “There are a lot of factors that go into this.”
According to Tynan, the girl’s 16-year-old boyfriend was driving the vehicle that was involved in the initial scuffle. He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery with a weapon, aggravated mob conduct, and possession of a weapon on property belonging to another. The 18-year-old man and teenage male were not charged.
Tynan said detectives wanted to talk to the two men involved and wanted to “hear their stories.”
All charges against the teen boy are pending.
“It is so sad, it’s just sickening, it’s horrific,” Davis said.
It’s unclear how severe the woman’s injuries were. Tynan said it’s possible to have life-threatening injuries if you have the sort of blunt force to your head.
“It could be life-threatening if you have multiple impacts to your head,” Tynan said. “That does not seem like a healthy combination.”
Police recovered a knife and other items that may have been used in the incident. Davis wouldn’t say whether the woman sustained any other sort of injuries.
The minor was taken to Roseland Community Hospital and the two juveniles were taken to North Valley Hospital in Peoria.
There’s no word on why police were called nor what charges the teen boy and 17-year-old woman
