Odd Fashion Trends of 1920

The latest Internet craze about temporary breast implants, or half-invisible “boob jobs” that last up to three months, is proof enough that there were some wild and wooly trends in 2021. From silly dances to outright strange fashion trends, the year held many wild surprises for those who dared to break the rules. Who knew the year would be dominated by weird hair styles and scarves that covered our faces from our noses to our lips? Or that we’d see an abundance of underwire bras, with the straps either coming loose as we walked or clinging to our backs like crazy straps on a garter belt? Oh, and that’s just the start!

One of the most common trend pieces was the chemise. Yes, the chemise that came to be known as the “little black dress,” that little black thing that barely hides the bulge that makes so many women uncomfortable in their clothing. Like many of the older generation, the chemise probably symbolized Victorian fashion more than it did comfort.

Yet despite the seemingly outdated appearance of these items, they continue to be popular among fashionistas of all ages. Perhaps it is their nostalgic feel, reminiscent of a time when fashion meant something more elegant and grown up than it does today. Or perhaps it is their modern appeal; their ability to combine nostalgia with the latest styles in a way that still feels sexy and feminine. Whatever the reason, fashions in 1920 that are still being worn today are proof enough that even with all the craziness of the rest of the decade, there were still some pretty wild and wacky patterns.
