The party did not give the location of the event, but said they expected “an increase in the attendance at rallies next week.”

The opposition NCP also condemned the move. The party held a separate rally in Lekh, the seat of the ruling LNGI party, where Mr Ngah said he would “protest peacefully”.

Mr Ngah said he did not believe the protesters in the area would “disrupt the peace of the people”.

Mr Nga was a key opponent of Vice-President Leni Robredo’s 2013 campaign, but she prevailed in the presidential election that year, the last to be held under the single-party system in a country that is still trying to sort out the legacy left after more than two decades of military rule.

The Communist Party has faced criticism from some sections of the community for its alleged role in political violence, and last month more than 50,000 people took to the streets in Jakarta to protest against its alleged involvement in the death of a lawyer.

The party has been accused of fuelling unrest in East Timor and in other cities that it backs, including in its homeland in Southeast Asia.

The president’s speech was widely criticised as disrespectful to Indonesia’s people.

The United Nations Human Rights Council said the speech breached Indonesian law last week and that a UN investigation would take place.

The council issued a statement last week saying that the president had not respected the UN Charter and that it would consider the matter once the election results were made public.

While the president said that democracy had “fared well during the elections”, the UN has warned that “the electoral process is not immune from interference.”

A UN commission in 2007 also called for an investigation, warning that the country’s elections “were marred by a level of interference so systemic that it could undermine the credibility… of the elections.”
