Noemi Ferr represents a unique individual in the National Football League. As an athlete, Ferr has developed into one of the best kick return specialists in the N.F.L. At the present time she is with the Denver Broncos as a guest contributor. Before the signing of Ferr, the team was trying to sign free agents Calvin Johnson and Mike Williams, but they were unable to agree on a contract with either of them. The team is expected to make a major addition by signing Ferr, who is forty-one years old, to a two-year contract.

Although it is rare to see a forty-one-year-old athlete to sign a contract to play football, this decision by Denver is understandable. The current economic conditions in America have made it necessary for businesses and companies to reduce expenses. Retaining a successful and experienced player who is still eligible to play in the N.F.L. at age forty can be very advantageous to a team. Even though retirement is always an option for many athletes and older players, many choose to continue their career in a different sport or national association. It is interesting to see how football matches today are developed with younger players being placed in an older role.

Noemi Ferr is a very wise choice to follow in the footsteps of predecessors such as Jackie Robinson and John Elway. The N.F.L. has done a lot to open the door for women in this sport. Several women have played well into their sixties and have reached a position of seniority in the N.F.L. Many of these women have become successful enough to serve as national team coaches.
