The 2021 Festival in Melbourne is the first major global festival to be hosted by Australia and promises to be a showcase of some of the most cutting-edge fashion the world over. This year’s fashion offerings are set to include some innovative designs, new materials and unique approaches to many traditional motifs. With over 150 designers and hundreds of textile manufacturers showing off their latest creations, there’s sure to be something for everyone. Here are some of the more interesting fashion trends that we’ve noticed during our research.
Traditional motifs and prints are set to rule the show this year. Although there have been some notable attempts to branch out with new, non-traditional materials and styles, the main attractions this year are clearly going to be traditional Australian designs and motifs. The main event, the Melbourne Grand Prix, will see a number of traditional designs put into use, with traditional dress forms and tunics taking centre stage. One of the more unusual tunics we saw was created by using old fashioned shoes and tunic tops as a base for the colour blocking and unique style that featured on the front.
For this year’s Festival, we predict that this theme will continue to dominate the design stakes with everything from gowns and dresses to leggings and skirts. However, this doesn’t mean that the more quirky or off-the-wall designs won’t find their way to the forefront of the show. In fact, we’re expecting to see more of these unusual styles to make their presence felt this year than we’ve seen in previous Festival seasons. By the time the 21st century rolls around, we’re certain to see an entirely new set of ideas taking centre stage when it comes to the best in Australian fashion.
