Modeling – The Real Issue

Cynthia Alesco is an entertainer and model that represent the new age/alternative type of woman. She is very tall and has been known to be the tallest character to ever grace the stage. Her height is not a problem but her skin color and nationality are the real problems. Most people would assume that if she were American that her height would be American. Unfortunately, she is Mexican and because of this her appearance must be categorized as Mexican American.

Recently Cynthia Alesco was accused by a fan of the show “America’s Next Top Model” for not revealing enough about her nationality in her appearance on the show. Specifically, Alesco’s height was brought into question when one of the judges mentioned how she didn’t look like an American, which is a common criticism aimed at Alesco. Alesco maintains that she did not get the criticism because America’s Next Top Model is owned by Versace, the same company that owns New York magazine and it’s parent company is Time Inc. The reason that she was criticized was because her nationality has something to do with her height and not her looks. Her spokesperson, Mark Simon said on a press conference, “Cynthia is proud of her height – definitely not a concern.”

As a model and entertainer, it is important to have a proper platform where you can speak your mind and display your best features. As a Mexican American woman, Alesco should know that her height is not an issue for her because America accepts her and supports her. It’s unfortunate that this has come about due to her being a woman of color. When looking at models and entertainers of different races and ethnicities, it is important to remember that they are all judged on their looks. Models are expected to look like models. When it comes to Alesco, her nationality is not a factor in how she is perceived by the public – and it should never be a factor.
