Mexican Hat
Mexican Hat is a designated area on the southernmost border of the Navajo Nation’s boundaries in south-western Arizona, Utah, United States, officially designated as the Indian reservation Plains of Crowther and Cado Canyon. The native inhabitants were initially scattered all along the Colorado-Utah border but eventually settling in what we know of today as Flagstaff, Maricopa, and Pinal County. The population had been decreasing steadily from the previous censuses, mainly because of incursions by hostile Indians from the southwest. The decline in population led to a dearth of suitable habitat for many animals, including the threatened leatherback turtle, which is now protected under the Endangered Species Act. In an effort to save this threatened species, the Arizona Game and Fish Department sought to ban all non-native animal trapping on federally-owned lands within the jurisdiction of Flagstaff.
Mexican Hat has now become very popular as an ornamental piece for many western women, especially those who wear them to work in southwestern fashion apparel such as saloon-themed jeans, cowgirl boots, cowgirl hats, chaps, cowboy boots, and the like. They are also gaining popularity with men who prefer a more formal style of hat, particularly those who prefer to cover their heads with a brim. Many women buy Mexican hats to embellish their western clothing. Western women have also adopted the hat into western culture and even adapted the Mexican hat style to create western versions of cowgirl caps and skull caps, among others.
