Maria Thorisdottir was born in Hedgreen, Scotland but her real homeland is in Norway. She is a dual national of both Scandinavia and England and thus has played both for her country and for her club in England. Born in Hedgreen, Thorisdottir first became interested in the sport at a very young age, when her father took her to a football match on drums and a football was given to her. From this time on, Thorisdottir developed a love for the sport and progressed through youth soccer, school football, college soccer, and then finally into a professional career with the Danish national team in 1994.

After retiring from sports, Thorisdottir pursued her studies, earning a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy at Aarhus University, where she specialized in orthopedics. While at Aarhus, she began a job as a physiotherapist and after getting experience in this field, she decided that she wanted to pursue a doctorate degree so as to expand her knowledge in sports medicine. At the end of her studies, Thorisdottir decided that it was time to enter politics, and in 2021 she contested her seat in the Norwegian parliament as an independent politician. However, her career in politics fizzled out quickly, and in the 2021 elections she gained only 6.5 percent of the vote.

Today, Thorisdottir lives in Britain with her husband and two children, but she maintains her role as an MP for the constituency of East Renfrewshire. She is still actively involved in local politics, and is now a member of the European Parliament. Maria Thorisdottir never married, nor did she have any children. The truth of her biography would seem to indicate that she does not suffer from a height difference. She has also said that she does not feel that her height difference has affected her career opportunities. On the other hand, one of her constituents told the Daily Record that she feels that it might have been a factor when she was chosen for a peerage post.
