Lyudmila Pires – (Pius: ‘Agnus Dei: ‘Homo habere: tanto,’ Epitome of John i., p. 534, St. Petersburg, 1828). 9. ‘He is the same who brought us out of Egypt, to be our God,’ so that the fact of their being in Egypt as His disciples at first is not really surprising, but is still one of the most important and obvious proofs that Jesus was their Teacher. 10. This phrase ‘begotten Son of God,’ by the way, is a translation from the Septuagint, and certainly does not mean ‘Son of God’. It means ‘His son (begotten),’ so to speak, by the same power with His own Father who also is Son of God (Ps. cxxxviii. 37, 36; 1 Cor. iv. 26), and so is also God (Theat. xxv. 42-3, and elsewhere). 11. This, for instance, is what the great theologian, Gassendi, tells us about the origin of the Trinity, when he says: ‘The Father is called the Son, the Son the Father, and the Father the Son, because they are, in a sense, one (Dei est, i., i, 7). 12. The Father’s action is, in fact, a further proof of His own divinity. (But this may be objected as absurd.—i.e. that it would be impossible to know whether God is truly and truly living if He did not manifest His existence by His works.) 13. This ‘greater love’ is, indeed, a sort of self-sacrifice to the Father, (Apoc. ii. 13-37, and elsewhere), and therefore it is true only according as it applies to the Father, or to the whole Father. But in the third sense it applies only to him: for it consists of His selfless love in his person and for his persons. And this must be understood either in another sense than here, or in the sense of the words of the Apostle (Rom. viii. 22) ‘God is love’ :— ‘It must needs be, if God be love, that we be made perfect in Him; if we are made perfect in Him, we shall see God. For we are no more our own; we are his children.’ 14. The words
