Lucy Bibi: Well, I think it was about the same size, for instance, as the United States (US), but, of course, it’s different. Anyway, this year she is giving one of the speeches about the need for a global boycott against Israel and there’s a whole group of young people who are attending the conference, and so it’s getting pretty huge.

When they arrived, they see some posters. A few say: “The death and the occupation are inseparable, so choose which one to hate more.” And in particular, they can’t be fooled by her. She is a radical leftie. She wears a lot of the clothes of a political activist and she looks like one. That makes it hard for people at home. They don’t know whether to support somebody who has no qualms about calling Israel an apartheid state.

She says she thinks that there should be more economic penalties for companies that profit from Israel’s occupation. They should pay those fines, just like they do for companies who profit from war crimes. No one doubts that there is a real problem with Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem. In fact, they are getting closer to Israel, or closer to the Israeli-controlled territories — Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, Jericho, Gush Etzion, Bethlehem, Nazareth and so on. There are Israeli settlements in the West Bank that are not recognized because they are illegal. So, if those are illegal, we should penalize them. And since some of them are illegal because they’re not recognized, the government should try to have them dismantled, or tax them, or do something.

Her speech is a plea for more support from the US and other countries. She says that if you read the American constitution, it is actually a document that guarantees freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and not the opposite — that it is an anti-Israeli document. She says, “Here is the only democracy in the Middle East that is an apartheid state.”

But it also means that freedom of religion is limited to what the government allows. This was a surprise to us. In other words, a democratic Palestinian right, or Israeli right. This is an absurdity, a lie, basically. Of course, we never asked her about the U.S. position during the Oslo deal, which was that the state of Israel had
