Lijuan Mansour.”
“I had no idea it had been a year since he left the island,” said the officer who spoke on condition of anonymity. “To know it was only a year later is very difficult. I don’t think I will be able to do a thorough investigation over the next two or three weeks.”
Mansour’s disappearance has become a source of deep personal anguish for family members, who were told that it had happened as he was leaving for dinner at some place on the beach.
The officer said that after arriving at the island with Mansour, which has a population of about 500, family members were led to his room. There were several empty beds at the tiny resort, which offers room service, he said. There was no sign of the 28-year-old.
“We went to check on him and got out,” he said. “The next thing we knew his phone was switched off. Nobody even knows what happened to him, let alone how he got off the island.”
Mansour’s family members are deeply angry that they do not know whether Mansour’s remains will ever be recovered, the policeman said.
“No one has a clue whether the body will ever come back,” he said. “There were rumors of a recovery for a long time, but I can’t say for sure. We don’t know that any bodies will ever be found because no one has seen the body, it’s a mystery.”
Mansour’s disappearance came on the same day as that of a young woman in the Philippines who also went missing while visiting the island, the officer said.
The young woman vanished after midnight and police were not certain if she got into trouble on the island. A local official on the island told CNN that the young woman was “reported missing because she was ‘looking for men.'”
