And with the Saints hoping to strengthen their injury-hit defence, the France striker looks the most likely target.

“He’s a player who’s come in who was playing well,” Saints manager Ronald Koeman said. “He can score goals.

“He has one year left. He likes to move in the last years.”

Fofana has scored four times in 26 appearances for Lille this season.
