Krzysztof Sosa, one of four lawyers at the defense’s center, said that while he expected a stiff plea hearing, he believed that he would win it.

“The first one to walk out of here with nothing to show for your efforts is not the best,” he said. “It’s going to be good.”

Rabbi David Sfard, a Philadelphia-based attorney who advises the defense bar and who represented Mr. Elad, said the two sides agreed that he expected to receive a stiff sentence.

“Our goal was to make sure the government does not walk out with a lighter sentence,” he said.

The two sides met earlier on Thursday, and Judge Peter Griesa told the attorneys he anticipated that the case would move quickly — and he set a preliminary hearing for 6 p.m. on Friday. The defense expects to go to the bench Friday morning to schedule that hearing, said Sfard, whose firm specializes in bankruptcy cases — including those surrounding Elad.
