There is a famous play by Evelyn Wood called “The Price of Loyalty” where the main character, Luisa Opalesky, tried to overcome her physical disability and attain something that seemed very elusive. To do this, she reached a new pinnacle of success in her profession which was marrying an affluent Russian man. As a result of this marriage, she achieved not only her ultimate ambition but also her long-cherished dream to be the tallest woman in her village. But the question that I would like to pose is whether it is possible for a Pole to achieve anything in their chosen career based on their height or nationality?
For the record, the answer is YES, provided that you are of normal height, are of European origin, and are of an average weight. Even if you are slightly taller than the average, you can still marry a wealthy man from a European background and if your weight is within normal limits. It should be noted however that it is possible for you to be of a very short height and still successfully married to a wealthy man, as in the case of the former Yugoslavia’s socialist regime, but with all due respect to all those who served there, you may have a more difficult time.
The question of nationality is very personal and different for every Pole, but I will point out a few examples here. In one of the most famous plays by Evelyn Wood, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, the main character, Scarlett O’Hara, is listed as Polish despite being only 5 feet in height. Yet her marriage to Captain Hook is so successful that he marries her not long after the end of the play. For me, the question of nationality has very little to do with height and success in a profession and often it is a question of how someone feels about their physical appearance, irrespective of race or nationality.
