A Japanese-American woman known as Noemi Monoke was born in Hawaii and at the age of eighteen, she was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. She was given a sentence to serve a two-year suspended sentence, but the court did not confirm if she is free until the end of the year. Noemi is under pressure to give up her American nationality even though she considers herself as Hawaiian because of the sentence that she has served.

Due to the sentence, Monoke decided to change her name from Nomi to Noemi and changed her occupation from a flight attendant to a sushi chef. Despite the unfavorable circumstances, she has maintained her loyalty to her father’s homeland and despite the fact that she had to change her name, she still considers herself to be a Hawaiian at heart. Although it may seem hard for her to give up her nationality, it was determined that her name was sufficient enough to remove the nationality issue and that by living and working in Japan, she would still be able to practice her chosen profession as a chef.

Noemi spent ten years in Japan before retiring to California. After her marriage to a Japanese man, she adopted his name and changed her name as well to Nomiemonoke Nishi. Her partner in life was another Japanese man called Hidehiko Yamase.
