DescriptionCynthia Calvillo is a Brazilian national who fights professionally in both the flyweight and lightweight divisions of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Currently, at the time of this writing, she is ranked #4 in the UFC women’s lightweight rankings. Prior to fighting in the UFC, Cynthia spent five years in kickboxing and striking her way up the ranks in Brazilian kickboxing. Her strikes had proven effective in her previous appearances, so it was only natural that she try her hand in MMA. In her first fight in the UFC, against Sarah Kaufman, Calvillo was not given any striking opportunities, but she did manage to submit Kaufman with ground and pound.
HeightAs it turns out, in terms of height, Cynthia Calvillo actually started out as a fairly small human specimen – approximately 5′ 8″. However, as she grew older and her weight increased, her size increased as well, to the point where even at her size, she still could not seem to get by in the UFC. As a result, it appears that in order to compete at the top level in mixed martial arts, it is simply not possible for women of any size to fight. As a result, even though many women wish to train and fight in mixed martial arts just for the fun aspect of it, they are often unable to do so, either because of their size or lack of skills.
Background Cynthia is originally from Peru, where she trained in kickboxing as an amateur before joining the Brazilian kickboxing circuit. While in Brazil, however, she also became known for fighting kickboxers from other countries, in particular England, who had arranged to bring Brazilian kickboxers to America to fight in what was thought to be a very lucrative venture. It was here that she first discovered her true talent – although professionally speaking, the amount of time she had to train in order to be ready to fight professionally never extended beyond a few weeks. It seems that despite her lack of formal training, Cynthia is actually very skillful, as seen when she successfully defeated one of her opponents with a head kick to the groin early in their match.
