When you mention the phrase “fashion” some people immediately think of the latest trend or style and they don’t realize that Mad Men was one of the very first shows to popularize new styles and keep hairstyles for men stylish. It was a great show and very good at taking what the media and Hollywood had to offer and keeping it real. From the beginning, it was obvious that Mad Men would be keeping true to its source material which was the Atlantic City Casino Scene and following the trend that had already become popular with coke men and African-American men at the time. The hairstyles were always true to the times. Taper cuts were in and black and white were still very popular colors. However, over the course of time, subtle changes have been made and now these classic looks are still favored by many men and women alike.
The very first trend that jumped off of the Mad Men hype was the extreme close ups of Don Draper’s (aka “The Mad Man”) famous hairdo. It had the appearance of a short, spiky cut and was originally a blunt cut with wide sweeping bangs that ended high on the forehead. This hairstyle became very popular and was later adopted by coke and rock stars such as Axl Rose, Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears. Today, the extreme close up look is still in style and many can be found on the red carpet at music events and even at various red carpet functions.
Another very popular trend that has come and gone from the spotlight is the slightly disheveled, unkempt look that has become known as the grunge look. This hairstyle, which features a messy, unkempt style, was most popular among college students in the early 2021’s and was most prominently associated with the grunge/ Hippie movement. Today, it is still a popular hairstyle but has been taken over by a much larger group of people. Many individuals have adopted this look because it is cute and fun, without being overly trendy or extreme. Both extreme and super popular haircuts have made a name for themselves in recent years and are a great way to make a statement about who you are and what you are going for in your personal style.
