Hip Hop Rap Fashion Trends From 1978 to Present Day

Hip hop clothing is one of the most popular areas of fashion and styling in the United States today. Many people think of hip hop when they hear the word “fashion”, but it really began over thirty years ago with the production of the first hip hop song. The early hip hop music was characterized by the beat, rhyme schemes, samples, and instrumental interplay among the artists that were performing. These artists would come together and perform at parties called “dubs” or “break-dubs”. The “dub” was a kind of pre-concert party for an artist to show off his skills and entertain his fans before a performance. In the case of hip hop music, the dj usually plays hip hop beats from the latest albums or from a variety of artists.

While the early breakouts showcased people wearing their favorite clothes and wearing matching accessories, the style of wearing the dj is not always the same for every artist. For example, a rapper might choose to wear special clothes and accessories to make his set up different than that of the crowd. Another rapper might choose to wear loose fitting pants so that he can move freely during his performance. The hip-hop fashion trends from 1978 forward are related to the styles of the artists wearing them.

Hip hop music and the fashion styles associated with it have changed drastically over the years, with particular changes in style and music. One thing remains constant, though, the outfits and props that are seen in hip hop dance videos are very different from the outfits and props seen in rap and other popular music. The hip hop videos from the late seventies and the early eighties featured mostly denim clothing and simple graphics on shirts. A typical hip hop DJ would wear a pair of Converse All-Stars with some sort of skateboard on the side or on top. Today, some of the more popular rappers are wearing urban tees with free flow designs and minimalistic art work.
