Maria Lax was born and raised in Finland. She is described as “a very private person who loves clothes, books, movies and the outdoors” by her publisher. Maria is described as a versatile and dynamic artist with an eye for detail, a love of color and a passion for social justice. Maria grew up in a small village in northern Finland, where she learned how to make do with what she had, in much the same way that her ancestors have done for hundreds of years. Today, Maria works as a fashion photographer in London, creating advertising campaigns for both men’s and women’s wear.

As a photographer, Maria has used color to express her creativity. In her photos, she presents life in its most natural and timeless form. She has used color to complement human anatomy and emphasize the relationship between the two genders. Her favorite colors are dark blue, purple, dark green and pale pink.

As a filmmaker, Maria Lax has gained worldwide attention for her feature documentary “Sociable” which examines the lives of socially disadvantaged people in rural Finland. Her images of ordinary people living in an unadulterated life show their depth of humanity. Maria Lax has gained international acclaim as a photographer and has produced several other award-winning films that address important issues on the social front. Her efforts as a photographer have been recognized with numerous prizes and awards including the Camera Girl prize from the Cannes Lions Festival, the Grandprix de la Croce de Belgique and the Silver Prize of the Turner Prize. Maria Lax’s color photography and eye for composition have been recognized by the International Association of Photography and the Royal Society of Arts in London.
