The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have recently announced that they will be reviewing the trademark application of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who is an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Ginsberg is an active participant in legal cases involving women’s rights. Her work as an attorney and commentator on many media sources have created a new area of trademark law referred to as “Ginsburg chic”.

Ginsberg is described as a “passionate defender of women’s rights” and an “outspoken critic of modern gender roles”. Recently Ginsberg became the latest in a long line of women to be featured in a fashion magazine cover. Her article in the October issue of Vanity Fair, “A Woman’s Guide to Fashion”, caused a lot of discussion in the fashion world and even generated several fashion industry blog articles and letters about her style. Ginsberg is described as an “outsider” in fashion and her innovative ideas are often discussed at conferences.

RBG socks were inspired by Ginsberg’s writings and public appearances. Her fashion sense is described as “inspired by the street smarts of a young girl who prefers to hang out with the girls.” RBG stands for “raine goulderie”. This is a reference to Ginsberg’s “street smarts”, which are informed by her “relationship” with the Jewish gourd and her strong commitment to being a vegetarian. Her socks are designed to represent her views on fashion and humor, without compromising her views on legal issues.
