Fernanda Cazares is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt who has been dominating the BJJ scene for the last decade. Her name has become synonymous with high flying, submission wrestling and women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a whole. It should be noted that Fernanda Cazares’ skills in Jiu-Jitsu are far from top notch but she has definitely carved her niche in the sport by becoming one of the top female champions in the world today. Her 5-figure first place at the Dos Republica tournament is a testament to her mastery of Jiu-Jitsu and her aptitude for the sport.
Fernanda Cazares began her Jiu-Jitsu career as a student of Rigan Machado and Carlos Gracie. She was impressed by their styles and their success in the sport, so she decided to train with them in her early years. While learning from Rigan and Carlos she came across the concept of cross training and incorporated it into her practice. Cross training teaches you how to defend against attacks from different directions which includes throws, sprawl positions and transitions from stand up to a mount position or back mount position. As she trained with different coaches and different schoolmates, she refined her technique and learned how to execute different strategies in each discipline.
Fernanda Cazares is not finished with her martial arts career just yet though, as she continues to win competitions and rack up belts. At 33 years old, she already has a lot of experience and is considered as one of the best in her age group. She attributes her mastery of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and her patience to her career path. She says that it takes time to learn something new and that it doesn’t matter how good one is in the beginning as one will always need to keep learning and improving. Now that she has passed the five-decade mark of her professional MMA career, it’s not the end for her as she is still looking to achieve the same level of success as she did in her younger years.
