Angelica Norman was born in Harlem in New York City the daughter of a blacksmith and a nanny who spoke English. She was adopted by Russian Jews after her birth and she may have been of Spanish or Portuguese nationality. After World War II Angelica became a US citizen and was active in the civil rights and anti-apartheid movements. After several years working as an actor and singer in shows she decided to concentrate on writing.
Her most popular and enduring feature was in the musical TV series Glee, playing Rachel Berry, a single mother who finds the love and fulfillment in her role. She was nominated for an Emmy in that role. She also has appeared in films such as Behind the Trees (in which she plays the girlfriend of a played-out serial killer), Swing Kids (as the mother of a boy who is on a street gang) and Love Actually (as a psychiatrist). She has always remained open about her own identity, however, and was a strong supporter of equal rights for women. She was married three times, the first of which to Richard Nixon aide John Nixon.
