The evolution of fashion trends starts and evolves through five main avenues: in the runway, on the street, in celebrities, through fashion magazines, and finally through the various fashion capital of the globe. Fashion designers and buyers alike to begin their journey at a particular fashion trend, following its development and progress through the years. As the fashion industry progresses, so does the evolution of fashion trends, with new styles, trends, and designs being introduced or released periodically. These changes are often marked by a period of flux, with designers and buyers alike watching the trends like a hawk, trying to determine if the trend is worth the investment, time and effort to develop and promote it further.
One of the most recent trends to take off across the globe is known as the “street style”. This trend, which first started in London and eventually spread all across the world, includes clothing for individuals who want to show off, or “show off” some of their hard, and sometimes hidden, skin. This trend includes jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, biker jackets, work wear, as well as accessories like watches and jewelry. Although this fashion trend has been very popular in the UK for the past few years, it has only recently gained momentum and popularity across the Atlantic Ocean, as many of its followers have now begun to follow the trend internationally. As opposed to previous years when street style was primarily associated with individuals with a “funny” sense of dressing (think skinny jeans and a worn out British English work shirt), in spring 2021, the trend appears to have taken on a more serious edge.
Fashion trends do not just appear; they evolve. While we can only speculate on when the next big thing will appear, we can at least observe and forecast the current trends that are taking place, as well as how these trends may evolve in the future. As fashion trends are driven by the players in the fashion industry, we can only wait and see what the next big thing will be for men, women, or children around the world. When watching, we should always keep in mind that along with the fashions, and trends, there are underlying factors, like climate, economy, and society, that affect the way we dress, and the type of clothing we choose to wear.
