For the last two years I’ve been working on a line of DIY sock gnomes for any child’s birthday party that I can find. The most challenging aspect of this project was coming up with ideas for the characters and how best to display them. With a great deal of imagination, a kid can come up with dozens of creative ideas and tie them all together in a unique way. I found that using a child’s imagination was the best way to get the creative juices flowing, while still remembering to use bright, fun colors for their outfits. After designing the gnomes and their accessories, it was time to start making some socks for the little fashion icons.
I started with a simple pair of pink socks, but found that my creative itch was rather quickly satisfied. I worked my way through a rainbow of colors, adding more gems as the design progressed. Soon I had a great looking group of Christmas ornaments that were not only colorful, but were also shaped like little gnomes. Before I knew it I had them all cut out and ready to go! And I was able to make a few extra pairs so that they were always on hand for the next Christmas party.
After I finished my first batch of these DIY sock Gnomes, my kids were eager to make their own. I know that some parents will probably think that these are too childish an idea for their eight-year old, but I can assure you that I made these babies take notice of themselves. They loved wearing their new hats and felt that they had a lot of fun playing with the hot glue and designing their own little fashion icon.
