Mr. Vanhouverts said his neighbour has a gun licence, but not the permit he might need to travel to other parts of the world or to pick up his children from school. He’s trying to get him to provide him with an ID so he can see them.

“I’m trying to find out if he has a gun licence, and if he doesn’t have a licence, he’s not allowed to own it,” he said.

Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau said a man was killed and five others wounded while trying to rob a bank Friday evening in a suburb of the capital.

The man was sitting in the parking lot at a Capital Reserve bank, in south-central Ottawa, when two individuals approached him, pulled out handguns and demanded money from him, Sgt. Julie Gagnon said. He left when he realized he had no more money on him and the suspects drove off in a getaway car.

Ms. Gagnon refused to provide further details on the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.

She said it was the second robbery that took place overnight in Ottawa after a similar robbery Wednesday night. A woman in a dark-coloured vehicle tried to grab something from her husband in what police are calling a home invasion attack around 10 p.m. in an apartment complex in the city’s southeast.

A witness called police, saying she heard a woman’s screams, then the sound of a gunshot, about 1:20 a.m. Friday in the 5500 block of Leveille Crescent in the Bloor St. W. and Shaw St. area of the city.

Gail Friesen, a resident of the neighbourhood, said she heard five separate gunshots and saw people running down the driveway. She said she saw a man with blood coming down his face.
