Shohei Kawamura is very happy to be back in action for the first time since the 2009-10 season. It is clear just by his enthusiasm and his energy that Kawamura felt that he would get much the same work back by going back to Japan.
“To be fair, I don’t think the fans have gotten any worse. In fact, as a Japanese man who spends most of his time abroad, it is difficult for most of us to understand, it is like living outside because we have no connection to our hometown or where the next match has to take place. On the other hand, in Japan, everything is better.”
His thoughts were brought back to a more practical standpoint, by his first match after a lengthy layoff.
“When I first came back into the ring it was almost four years after my accident [in August 2006]. You can hardly imagine what the physical change is like, and also that this is my second one in two years. You have to understand that the injuries didn’t affect my performance, that I was just coming back, taking my time and working. And I am in no hurry to go back to the ring.”
He does feel like, with the return from injury of Kazuhiko Takahashi, that he has given more focus to the business of wrestling and to the role of promoter.
“It is something that is in my blood. The way I view myself and what I want to do is clearly defined. However, in my eyes, no-one can judge what I do other than myself, and how I think is not only for me. If one does not want me to perform a part of the time, or if it doesn’t suit my liking, they should say so.”
Now that he has returned to the ring, Kawamura thinks that he has improved his wrestling by two to three steps. For the time being, it seems that he is not going to change his style, but he might consider going back to a style where he is less aggressive.
On the outside looking in, however, it appears that at 38 years of age, and two years removed from a World Heavyweight Championship reigns, he is ready for another run at the top.
