Francesca Amfitheatrof was born in Genoa, Italy in 1932 and she has created many jewelry designs both as an individual and as a member of the group called “Deguarti di San Diego”. She worked for the famous jeweller Luciano and became known worldwide as one of their most successful designers. Francesca Amfitrof’s talent was recognized when she was asked to design the necklace that bears the image ofiosopheruses on it. This particular necklace is considered a symbol of love and friendship.
Francesca Amfitrof studied briefly at the University of Genoa and she earned a degree in architecture. From there she pursued a variety of different professions such as a teacher, a cook, a cabinetmaker and even a typist. Later in life, she decided that the career that she had so avidly chosen was better suited to a career as a jewelry maker and she concentrated mainly on jewelry making while maintaining some of her academic pursuits. In the 1950s, Francesca Amfitrof joined the family business of Gucci and concentrated on their footwear products such as sandals and clogs. In later years, she was involved with advertising and designing clothing, which resulted in her having a large collection of clothing which she designed.
Francesca Amfitrof also worked for several other fashion designers during her career, including Salvatore Ferragamo, Roberto Cavalli and Piero Pacini. While working as a commercial designer for CiaGram and Lancome, she began creating her own lines of jewelry and clothing. After retiring from CiaGram, she decided to take up the challenge of creating her own brand. This led to Francesca Amfitrof being the first woman to launch her own perfume, shoes, bedding and accessories in the United Kingdom.
