Basanti Hninjana, a 26-year- old who served in the Armed Forces, was among the crowd of men who pelted stones at the police when they tried to disperse the crowds. Hninjana’s sister died in the clashes.

Two more men were also killed in police action.

A man called Abdul Ayoub, 25, was shot dead when cops tried to arrest two others during the unrest on Saturday. A young man who was stabbed in the chest while shielding his sister fled into the city, where he was identified by relatives as Ahmed Mughal.

A young man also fell to his death at about 11am from an alleged gunshot wound at Sohan Nagar.

At 9.15am, a man named Kazi Mian Raza Khatoon, 25, was gunned down after a clash between the two sides erupted near the bus stand. Khatoon was a student of the Madras Medical College, and served as a paramedic in Bikaner.

In the same area, a man named Mohammed Iqbal, 28, who served in the Army, was killed when a cop opened fire.

“I am angry because of the killing of my friend who was shot dead by the police,” Mohsin, whose name has not been revealed, claimed. “I was in the bus stand and I heard about the murder of a person. I rushed there and he was already lying there when two policemen came and opened fire at the spot.”

Aftermath of Monday riot:

The clashes left about 60 people injured in the city’s bus stand.

“I was returning home at about 8.30 pm on Saturday evening when I was confronted by a mob. They started throwing stones and Molotov cocktails and I had to hide behind the bus stand… The police tried to disperse the crowds, but I too got injured. They then brought me to a hospital nearby but they could not save my life,” said Mani Mehta, an official who has been in hospital for a week.

“I am scared to return to my home because of the threats I received.”

Iqbal’s elder brother Mujahid, whose picture was published at the spot of his brother’s killing, told reporters during the crisis, “We ask the police to compensate us before we go back and demand police reforms.”
